EHN is now working with Western Regional Hospital in Nepal and can offer places to medical students and interns.
Gandaki Government Hospital is one of the biggest in central Nepal with 500 beds and upwards of 1000 patients per day. They have General Medicine, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Emergency Medicine, OBGYN, ENT, ICU/CCU, Haemodialysis, Paediatrics with NICU, Psychiatry and
The hospital sees around 200+ international students every year from countries such as Germany, UK, USA, Australia and NZ plus 72 Nepalese students on Internships
per year along with a Post Graduate Programme in all departments.
As a government hospital all services are free and therefore offer a valuable healthcare service to the poorer people of Nepal and their families.
As a volunteer/intern you will not have permission to treat patients but will be involved in the day to day running of which ever ward or department you are with. The hospital is of course open 7 days a week but you would be expected to take at least one day per week off to relax and enjoy the local area. The hospital also runs its own medical camps in surrounding villages from time to time and volunteers are normally invited to join in.
Items to bring: stethoscope, white coat, scrubs and one medical dictionary is advisable as you they don’t have extra equipment and clothes for you to use. The hospital are happy for you to wear comfortable footwear with a close toe, t-shirts or shirts and jeans, trousers so skirts but please make sure the tops are not low cut and skirts to short.
EHN and the hospital would require a letter from your university requesting a place for you as a volunteer/intern along with a complete application form stating your intended dates and contact details.
Volunteer fees on this project are higher than the normal EHN fees, this is due to the donation made to the hospital and social department who manage all the foreign volunteers and interns. As with all EHN projects we charge a £80 admin fee which covers your airport pickup and drop, city tour, 3 nights in a guesthouse in KTM with breakfast and transport to and from your project. The hospital fee is $660 per month which covers your donations to the hospital and department and homestay accommodation with two meals a day.
